Carbon Steel Pipe Schedule 40 — Complete Dimensions & Weight Reference Chart

What is Schedule 40 Pipe?

Schedule 40 (SCH 40) is the most commonly used wall thickness designation for carbon steel pipe in industrial, commercial, and residential applications. It provides a balance of pressure rating and material cost, making it the default choice for general piping systems worldwide.

Schedule 40 pipe is sometimes called "standard weight" (STD) for sizes up to NPS 10". For NPS 12" and larger, STD wall thickness matches Schedule 30, not Schedule 40.

How to Calculate Steel Pipe Weight

Formula (metric):

Weight (kg/m) = (OD − WT) × WT × 0.02466

Where: OD = outside diameter (mm), WT = wall thickness (mm), 0.02466 = carbon steel density factor

Example: 4" SCH 40 pipe — OD 114.3 mm, WT 6.02 mm
Weight = (114.3 − 6.02) × 6.02 × 0.02466 = 16.07 kg/m

Formula (imperial):

Weight (lb/ft) = (OD − WT) × WT × 10.69

Where: OD = outside diameter (inches), WT = wall thickness (inches)

Schedule 40 Pipe Pressure Rating

Using Barlow's formula (simplified): P = (2 × S × t) / D

Where: S = allowable stress (20,000 psi for A53 Grade B at 72°F), t = wall thickness, D = outside diameter
